The first two things I purchased for my new place two years ago was #1, wine glasses (duh), and #2, Settlers of Catan. Now I know we can agree that wine glasses make total sense, but why a board game? If you’re asking that question, you obviously have yet to Settle Catan and I in no way feel sorry for you.
Once those unhip winds blow you out of Trinity Bellwoods and force you indoors for the next 8 months, the idea of playing a good old school board game (with vino) becomes much more appealing.
When Mattel sent me an oversized, multi-coloured box filled with Mad Gab, Uno, Apples to Apples, Bounce – Off and an XL GAME ON! button, my winter started to look much more promising.
The only catch, I would have to throw a GAME TIME MOMENT in any way I deemed appropriate to prove that anytime is game time. Challenge. Accepted. And so, heavily armed with red wine, champagne and a bowl full of left-over halloween candy, my game-time moment was a success.
Seriously though, board games are the sh*t. Nothing is better then spending a Sunday with your besties Settling Catan or Gabbing like a Mad Man, hangover or not.
One of my fondest memories from last Winter was centred around Snakes and Lattes on Bloor. Upon arrival, we were told the wait time was a mere 4 hours. We boycotted the wait, bought a k*ck ass 2-person game called Jaipur, and walked over to CSI Coffee Pub to set up camp for the day. Legitimately the best hideout in the city, and the best backdrop for domination.
Whether you’re playing at home with friends, at one of Toronto’s many board game cafes, or with your own game at your fav. nook in the city, it’s such a satisfying feeling to switch things up this winter.
Oh, and winning isn’t so bad. Make your own Game Time Moment this Winter, I double dog dare ya 😉
